Navigating bringing home a new baby can be a big adjustment for the entire family, especially little ones. I’ve gathered 4 tips for newborn sessions with siblings to ensure we can document those beautiful moments and keep you feeling stress-free and enjoying these precious milestones!
Most often families request newborn sessions within 2 weeks of baby’s birth, however, when there are other siblings, I always recommend time for an adjustment period. Many times, especially for toddlers, having a new sibling is not always seen as a positive. Planning a session for 4-6 weeks after birth is often a much better fit for most families to allow time and space to adjust to their new family dynamic.
It’s pretty well known babies should eat 20-30 minutes before a newborn session, but toddlers are much happier with a full belly too! It also helps deter snack breaks which can result in crumbs or stains on outfits and messy mouths. Ensuring everyone is happy and full before starting our session is always a good idea.
Kids are kids! They love to play, run, jump on {and off!} beds, and just be silly. Let them! Let your babies be themselves. As a lifestyle photographer, I specialize in documenting the moments as they happen. Don’t force the older siblings to sit still and smile! It’s hard as adults to stay in the same spot, so I can only imagine how difficult it is for the little ones. Allow them to interact with their new baby brother and sister, let them read books or play with their favorite toy, or even jump off the bed!
Most importantly, remember to have fun! A newborn session with siblings is so special and memorable, so allow yourself to be present and embrace the beautiful chaos. Let your toddler or older kids be themselves, and soak up those precious newborn snuggles!
A newborn session with siblings can be a fun, intimate, and exciting experience for everyone involved. With a little patience, fun, and preparation, the session can be memorable and leave you with beautiful moments you’ll cherish for years to come. If you are going to be welcoming a new baby soon and are ready to book your in-home maternity or newborn session, let’s chat! I would love to document this exciting season of your life.
